Prevention and Care Tips for Parents Supporting Young People with Mental Health Struggles: Live Q&A

Supporting young people who are experiencing a period of poor mental health or recent mental health diagnosis can be incredibly difficult for parents, and finding guidance can feel overwhelming. However, there is a wealth of good advice out there.

This Children and Young People’s Mental Health Week, started by Place2Be, we’re taking the opportunity to explore what you can do to support your children and look after yourself in the process. Whether you want to know what to look out for to help prevent worsening symptoms, have questions around starting difficult conversations, need support yourself or just want to hear your story recognised, we’re making the space to discuss.

  • Stevie Goulding

Stevie is the Senior Manager of Parents and Carers services at YoungMinds, which offers vital support to parent/carers who have concerns for their child’s mental health. Stevie has worked in frontline support services and has become a Lead Safeguarding Officer for the organisation. Stevie also holds a Master’s in Forensic Psychology, and has significant experience in supporting parents/carers.

  • Christella Dwyer

Christella is the founder of FACTS (Families and Carers Training Support), a teaching course for families and carers of young people in association with the Anna Freud National Centre for Children and Families and Rethink Mental Illness, and leader of Harrow BPD Carers support group. She has also participated on parent and carer advisory boards for individuals supporting people with BPD, and volunteers on NHS mental health support services. She is passionate about improving mental illness services and carer-led support services.

  • Janis Laverick

Janis is a Service Manager for Gloucestershire Self Harm Helpline where they provide emotional support, information and help to anyone affected by self-harm or suicidal thinking. She is also a qualified trauma therapist has worked extensively delivering training to front line mental health professionals.
